Bike Picnic
A leisurely bike ride to a local park with a small picnic gets your family outdoors to enjoy the crisp afternoon air and back indoors before anyone gets cold. Pack a small picnic with a drink, sandwich and piece of fruit for each member of the family. Adults can pack the picnic in a backpack and carry it with them on the ride. Stop at a nice location and take a small break to enjoy your lunch. Hop back on the bikes to ride home before the chilly evening hits.
Leaf Pictures
Spend a little time outdoors gathering leaves and plenty of time indoors creating pictures to keep your family entertained on a cold autumn day. Bundle up and head outdoors to gather colorful leaves to incorporate into a picture. Head indoors and make tea, hot chocolate or hot apple cider for everyone to sip on as they create fall themed pictures.
Have everyone draw a picture that uses a leaf, such as a cartoon monster face with the leaf as hair. Glue the leaf to the paper and let dry. Your family can also glue overlapping leaves on a piece of paper to create autumn mosaics or place the leaves under the paper and use crayons to create rubbings.
Painted Pine-Cone Wreath
Minor effort from each family member is all you need to create a decorative pine-cone wreath for the autumn season. Gather assorted pine cones from your yard. Divide the cones among family members and paint with decorative designs. Let the cones dry overnight. Bring the family together the next day to position and glue the pine cones over a foam or cardboard wreath form. Let the cones dry and hang the wreath on your front door.
Painted Pumpkins
Pumpkins work as decorations for more than just Halloween. Provide each family member with a pumpkin, pencil and assorted paint pens. Sketch a design on the pumpkin, color it in with the paint pens, let dry and put it on display. Consider sketching a cartoon turkey for a Thanksgiving theme, a scary witch for a Halloween theme or a silly face for a general theme.
Harvest Picking
A family trip to a local farm gives everyone a chance to pick their own produce and learn more about how food grows. Farms and orchids often offer apple and pumpkin picking for families during the fall. Take the produce home to carve the pumpkins or bake the apples to continue the family fun.
