Fun Games for Kids & Not for Grown-Ups

Some games that kids play are only appropriate for children. These games often include physical activities and closeness that would be awkward for adults. These kids' games can also be simple to play, use children's imaginations and require the players to be silly. While kids may love to play these games, adults may find them boring, uninteresting and too basic.
  1. Red Rover

    • Red Rover is a children's game that requires a group of kids. This game can be played during recess, PE class or at home with friends. Divide the kids into two equal teams and direct each team to a separate end of a yard or field. The teams stand in a line and clasp hands. The first team begins the game by choosing a player on the opposing team and chanting, "Red Rover, Red Rover send [child's name' right over." The child whose name is called must then run across the field and try to break through the line of children. If the hand clasps are broken, then the child chooses a team member to take back to her team's line. If the hands remain together, the child has to remain on that team. The team to lose all their players first, loses the game.

    Drag The Body

    • This is an outdoor children's game that promotes physical activity and teamwork to successfully win the game. Children divide themselves up into two equal groups and each group finds a blanket. One child on each team lays down on the blanket and the other team members grasp an edge. Someone shouts "Go" and the teams race to drag their body blankets across the predetermined area and back. The team that crosses the finish line first, wins the game.

    Mother May I

    • This kids' game is versatile as it can be played indoors or outdoors. During Mother May I, one child is chosen to be "it" or "Mother" and stands across the room or yard from the other players. Each player has a turn to ask, "Mother may I take [number] of [type of] steps forward?" The "Mother" then replies with a, "Yes, you may" or "No, you may not." The child then takes the steps or remains in place. Types of steps include baby, giant, scissor, hopping and spinning. The child who reaches the "Mother" first, wins the game.

    Octopus

    • Octopus is a tagging game that is appropriate for children to play. An outdoor area is marked with two lines at either end. One child is chosen to be the "Octopus" and stand in the area between the lines. The remaining players line up on one end of the playing area. The "Octopus" then says, "Come [a particular action] in my ocean." The actions can include crawl, run, twirl, hop and move backwards. The children must perform the action specified while trying to reach the opposite end of the area. The "Octopus" runs around and tries to tag children as they cross. If a child is tagged, they become seaweed and must remain in place until the game ends. The seaweed can help tag children that pass by them. Once all children are tagged, the game ends.
