Games for Kids Ages 5-9 for Church

Games help young children memorize biblical verses and concepts. When you teach children ages 5 to 9 about their faith, plan games that will pique their interest. These games also build socials skills and introduce the young children to any new faces at the church, which means a chance to make new friends. Encourage the children to do their best by awarding biblical bookmarks, stickers and pockets Bibles to the winners.
  1. Fruit of the Spirit Memory Game

    • Print or draw pieces of fruit on small pieces of card stock. For each fruit, write one of the "fruits of the Spirit," such as gentleness, peace or goodness. Make two identical cards for each fruit. Laminate the cards if you would like them to last longer. Place the cards face-down and have the children play a game of memory. The child who finds the most pairs wins the game. Find the Bible verse in Galatians 5:22-23, which reads "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Some versions replace "longsuffering" with "forbearance."

    Bible Verses

    • Teach the children one Bible verse throughout the class. Have each child read the verse aloud. Have them read it together several times. Write the verse on a chalkboard or a dry-erase board. When you are ready to play the game, tell the children to close their eyes. Erase three or four of the words from the verse. The first player to raise his hand and tell you one of the missing words receives a prize. Each player who can tell you a missing word in the Bible verse will also receive a prize.

    Bible Book Bingo

    • Create several bingo cards using books from the Bible, such as Genesis, Exodus, Kings and Psalms. Write the same names on small slips of paper and place them in a bowl. Give each child a bingo card, plus small dots to use as bingo markers. Call out the book names and have the children mark their cards. The first child to bingo horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins the game and a prize.

    Memory Bible Verse Showdown

    • Read a Bible verse aloud and ask the children whether they know the verse. Select two players who say they know each word of the verse, and have them stand back-to-back. One player must say the first word of the verse and the second player will say the second word. Keep playing until one of them makes a mistake. If one player gets it wrong, she loses, and you can award a prize to her opponent. If both players finish the entire verse, award both of them prizes.
