Flying Discs
Use flying discs to create a tower tumble game. Place a pile of small flying discs in the yard. Divide the discs evenly to all the approximately 6-year-old children. Have the children stand in a circle and select one player to go first. That player must place a flying disc on the ground in the middle of the circle. The next player in the circle must place a flying disc on top of the disc on the ground. Keep going until someone causes the disc tower to fall. That player is out of the game. Start a new game and eliminate one player each game. The last player standing wins the game. Another game with flying discs is to mark a starting line and have all the player line up on the line. Each player must throw a flying disc and the player who throws it the farthest distance from the line wins the game. This game does require a number of flying discs.
Hunts
Make a treasure hunt in the backyard by hiding several plastic gold coins. Give each child a bag to put the coins in as she finds them. The player who finds the most coins wins the game and a prize.
Relays
Divide the children into two teams and have them line up at a starting line. Mark a finish line about 20 feet away from the starting line. Give the first player in each team line an inflated balloon. When you say, "Race," the first players in line have to hit the balloon in the air all the way to the finish line. He must run the balloon back to the next player who must do the same thing. The first team to finish the relay race wins the game. You can also do relays like a wheelbarrow race, where one children walk on their hands while another player holds their feet in the air, or a three-legged race, by tying the players inside legs together with a soft piece of fabric.
Water Games
For a sunny day, have the children participate in a few water games. Have the children divide into pairs and give each pair a water balloon. The team who can toss the water balloon from the farthest distance without it breaking or popping wins the game. Another water game idea is sponge tag. Place a large bucket in the middle of the yard with water and sponges. Select one player to be "it." The "it" player has to use the wet sponges to try to tag other players. If "it" tags a player with a water sponge, she is the new "it."
