Halloween Party Games for Grade Schoolers

Bobbing for Apples

• The reason this traditional Halloween game is still played is because it's timeless fun for kids. Play outdoors to prevent a mess or play indoors over a plastic tarp for easy cleanup. Fill a large container, such as a deep wash bucket, with cold water and small apples. Each grade schooler slips on a plastic apron to help prevent splashes and has 20 seconds to remove an apple from the bucket with his mouth. Winners eat the apple prize and losers can try the game again.

Pumpkin Bowling

• This game works best if played outdoors on an autumn afternoon, just in case the pumpkin breaks. The game requires 10 plastic bowling pins and small, round pumpkins. Paint a ghost face on each pin with black craft paint and let dry. Remove any stems from the pumpkins. Set the pins in a flat area and measure out how long you want the bowling lane. Each player has two tries to roll a pumpkin down the lane and knock down the ghost pins. Play the game in teams with traditional scoring or as a "one turn" game with prizes for anyone who gets a strike.

Monster Beanbag Toss

• Bring out the monstrous part of Halloween with a beanbag toss game for grade schoolers. Create the monster using a large piece of plywood painted to look like the head of a cartoonish, three-mouth monster. Cut a circle from the plywood for each mouth. Players have three chances to throw a beanbag into one of the monster's mouths. Players that get all three beanbags in the holes may win a prize.

Candy Walk

• Give the classic "cake walk" game a Halloween twist by playing spooky music and providing candy corn prizes. Write a number on a piece of paper and tape it to the floor. Add as many numbers as needed, such as 10 for a single class party or 25 if it's a school-wide event, in a circle around the floor.

  Players stand on a number to start the game. When the Halloween music starts, players dance around the circle, stopping as soon as the music stops. A number written on a scrap of paper is picked from a bowl and the player standing on the corresponding floor number wins a bag of candy corn.
