I Am Looking for Games to Play With Children Ages 4 to 12

When thinking of kids' games, many immediately think of video or computer games that require little intelligence or activity. Get your kids aged 4 to 12 up and moving, or at least thinking, with a few games that require more than hand-eye coordination. Games are great outlets for kids in school, church, camp or even home settings. Encourage your kids to play more physical games that require strategy, as these activities are good for developing reason.
  1. Heads Up Seven Up

    • "Heads up seven up" is a game that is best when played with groups of children that number anywhere between 20 and 40. At the beginning of the game seven kids are chosen to come to the front of the room. The rest of the children are told to close their eyes and put one thumb up. Those who were chosen to wait now go around and select one other child by putting her thumb down. After the choosers return to the front of the room, the kids who were selected take turns guessing who picked them. Those that guess right change places with the choosers.

    Red Rover

    • Red rover should be played with 10 or more. Divide the kids into two teams. Have each team make a line with the kids standing next to each other in a row. The kids link by holding each others wrists firmly. Team one shouts the phrase, "red rover, red rover, send (insert individual from team two) right over!" The person who is called over must run and try to break the hold between two people from team one. If he breaks the hold, he takes one person from team one to team two. If not, he joins team one. The game is over when the two teams are one.

    Candyland Board Game

    • Candyland can be played with two to four players. Shuffle the play cards and place them face down. Each child picks a play piece and places it at the start. The youngest person goes first, and the order of play continues clockwise. To move, the player draws a card and follows the rules. If one color block is chosen, the player moves to the next square of the color. If a two-color block is chosen, the player moves forward two squares of that color. If a character card is drawn, the player's token is placed on the selected character's slot. The game is over when someone reaches the Candy Castle.

    Where's the Bone?

    • This game can be played with four or more. One kid is the dog,and sits in a chair with her back to the other kids. Place an object under the chair. This is the bone. Another kid is secretly the bone thief. The chosen thief hides the bone or leaves it under the chair. Afterwards, the kids chant, "Doggy where's your bone, it has been taken from your home. Who took it? Could be you!" The dog then guesses who the bone thief is or guesses if it's under the chair. If the dog is right, she stays put. If the guess was wrong, then the dog trades places with the bone thief.
