Story Games for Children

Reading should be encouraged for all children. Children discover ideas from books that influence them. Encourage children to read storybooks frequently to encourage a love of reading. Play games that help children continue to love reading and that help them completely understand the words being read.
  1. Story from Pictures

    • Creating stories from pictures will show creativity levels in children.

Picture books leave room for different interpretations. Picture books are commonly associated with babies and toddlers, but those books can be used throughout childhood. Pictures will inspire visual images in the mind. For a game, have children create a story that can be seen from the picture. Ask for descriptive details and possible scenarios for each picture in a book. Have children use colors and objects to describe the setting and location.

    Memory Game

    • Children can choose the color and appearance of their storybook character.

Have children decide on four or five of their favorite characters for this game of memory, and then have them draw the characters on paper. They will have to draw two pictures that are the same or at least very similar on one side of the paper; the other side will be left blank. Cut out the drawings in square shapes and mix up the order. Cards will be placed blank side facing up, and children will play this game by flipping cards over to make a match.

    Alternate Endings

    • Children will be excited to write down their ideas.

After a child reads a new book, or when he has a favorite book, he may realize that he is unsatisfied with how the story ended. This game will allow children the option of having a story end the way they prefer. Children can write the alternate ending and then read it aloud to others. Have the child come up with a realistic yet very creative ending that expresses her likes and dislikes for characters.

    Role-Play

    • A cape and mask can be worn to identify as a character.

Storybooks that are favorites of children can be about things they favor or types of people they aspire to be. If a child has a favorite character in a series of books, there will be many stories and adventures that children will read about. Have children dress up in costumes either homemade or store-bought, and allow them to act out their favorite parts of books. Get involved and be a character yourself to complete scenes.
