Indoor Group Games for Children in Winter

Though the weather outside is frightful, your kids don't have to wait for spring to have a fun time. Winter games played indoors can give a group of kids all the excitement of the season without having to brave the harsh weather outside. So peel the kids away from the television and into a large indoor space for some entertaining winter-themed games.
  1. Snowball Relay Race

    • Divide the children into two groups and line the groups up single-file at one end of a large room. Hand the first players of each team a foam ball and a tablespoon. When you say "Go," the two players race each other to the other end of the room and back, balancing their snowballs on their spoons the entire time. If a player drops her ball, she has to try again from the starting point. After all of one team's players have successfully made it back to their line before the opposing team, they win the game.

    Match the Snowflake

    • Before the game, create several paper snowflakes, making two identical copies for every snowflake you make. To make the snowflakes, fold a square piece of paper into a triangle and cut it up in whatever fashion you like. Unfold the paper to reveal your snowflake. Hide the snowflake copies around the play space and distribute the other copies to the children -- one per player. The kids all try to locate their matching snowflakes. The first one to do so wins.

    Abominable Snowman

    • Select one player to become the abominable snowman. He sits in the middle of the play area with a stuffed animal about 3 feet behind him. The rest of the group sits three feet behind the stuffed animal. The snowman faces away from the group as they take turns silently trying to steal the stuffed animal. If the snowman thinks he hears someone behind him, he lets out a loud roar. If anyone is there, he trades places with them. If not, he continues playing the snowman. Play the game until everyone has a turn at playing the abominable snowman.

    Winter Word Chain

    • Sit all of the children down in a circle. Pick one child to start and give him a ball. He has to come up with a word that has to do with the winter season. He then throws the ball to another player in the group. She has to repeat the previous person's word and add her own. This pattern continues with people getting eliminated if they forget the word chain, until only one player remains and wins the game.
