Orchard Games for Children

Orchard games for children can be an exciting learning theme for younger children. This theme may work during the beginning of the year for back to school days, or a little later in the fall. Play orchard games for children outside while visiting an orchard, or bring the games inside the classroom for enriching, free time play.
  1. Bobbing for Apples

    • For this activity, use small apples, or cut apples in slices so kids can easily pick them up with their mouths. Place several small apples or slices of apples in a big bucket of water. Children can try to get them out by using only their mouths. Offer prizes for the child who gets the most, as this is not always easy.

    Apple Match

    • Cut apples out of construction paper using red, yellow and green paper. Craft foam also works for this project. Make the apples all different sizes and shapes, but make two of each design. Glue one set of the apples to the inside of a Manila folder or piece of paper. Put the other set in a plastic bag and have the kids take out one at a time to match the sets of apples.

    Apple Pass

    • This game is played just like Hot Potato. Place children in a circle and give one of the children an apple. Play some music while the children pass the apple around the circle. When the music stops, the child with the apple is out. The last child to remain in the circle wins the game.

    Toss the Apple

    • Find a large piece of cardboard and draw or paint a big orchard tree on the board. Cut out circles in the tree large enough for apples to pass through. Set up the cardboard tree and have kids stand behind a line a few feet from the tree. Have the kids toss the apples, in an attempt to get the apples through the holes.

    Apple Relay

    • Divide students into two teams. Place a basket of apples at the end of both teams. Each basket should have an even number of apples. At the end of each line, place another empty basket. Have the first person in line grab an apple and pass it down the line; the last student in line drops the apple in the empty basket. Have students repeat this for each apple. The team that gets all their apples in a basket first wins.
