The Best Board & Card Games for Kids

Video games are often the preferred form of entertainment for many kids. However, playing board games and card games is a good way to bring the family together. In addition, many of these games teach children language, math and problem-solving skills. There is a huge variety of board and card games to choose from, so knowing which ones are best-suited for kids can be important.
  1. Beggar My Neighbor

    • Beggar My Neighbor is a card game for two to six players. Deal out the entire deck to start; it is best to use two decks when there are more than three players. Cards remain in a face-down pile and play starts with the player to the left of the dealer. Play continues in a clockwise direction until a court card court (Jack, Queen, King or Ace) is turned over. The next player must then pay a forfeit. An Ace requires four cards, a King requires three cards, a Queen requires two cards, while a Jack requires one card. If the forfeit cards played are between 2 and 10, the stack of cards is picked up by the player who put down the last court card. However, if a court card is played, the following player must then pay the corresponding forfeit. The game continues until a player has all the cards; that player is declared the winner.

    Clue

    • Clue is a board game for three to six players. The objective is to solve the mystery of Mr. Boddy's murder. Sort the cards into suspects, rooms and weapons and place the top card from each group into the envelope. Shuffle the remaining cards and divide them evenly among the players. Roll the die to start the game (Miss Scarlet always goes first and play then continues to the left) and move your token accordingly. Each time you enter a room, you may suggest that room, a suspect and a weapon. The player to the left must show you one of the cards suggested. If they don't have any, the following player must reveal one of his cards. Use your notebook to keep track of your progress until you are ready to make an accusation. After making an accusation, look at the cards inside the envelope, but don't let anyone else see them. If you are correct you win the game. If not, you remained involved in the investigation but can no longer move your token, nor win the game.

    Pig

    • Pig is a card game designed for three or more players. Start by taking four of a kind out of the deck for each player and discard the remaining cards. Shuffle the cards and deal four to each player. The objective is to get four of a kind. Each player then chooses one card to pass to the left, and the process is repeated until someone has four of a kind. Once that is the case, the player should quietly put his finger on his nose. If you see another player with his finger on his nose, then you must do the same. The last player to do so is given a letter each time. The first player to reach "P-I-G" is the loser.

    Scrabble

    • Scrabble is ideally aimed at children aged eight years and older. Players draw a letter from the bag to determine who goes first. Each player then draws seven letters from the bag and places the tiles on the rack. The first player must combine two or more letters to make a word across the center square. Play then continues clockwise and players draw tiles from the bag after each turn to replenish their supply of letters. The game continues until all there are no tiles left in the bag and a player uses his final letter. The game may also reach a conclusion if no further moves can be made.
