Bird Count
Teachers encourage students to observe both the social behavior and flight patterns of birds by asking students to count the number of birds in a large flock. Though the count may be time consuming when large numbers of birds are present, students receive valuable environmental training with this outdoor game.
Mimic
To play this game, teachers instruct students to mimic the call emitted by either a single bird or birds in a group. Ideally, teachers should introduce this game in a park or outdoor setting. In a classroom setting, the teacher may choose to present a recording containing the calls of several species of birds.
Name Game
Using flashcards, teachers instruct students to name each species of bird as the teacher presents each card. Ideally, each student in the classroom should receive the opportunity to identify a species of bird. In addition, students may be split into groups to encourage discussion and learning interaction.
Flight
Students must determine whether biologists classify the bird shown on a presented image as either flightless or capable of taking flight. In addition, teachers may assign this game to students as a homework project requiring students to research the flight status of several species.
