Tag
Kids enjoy the thrill of running away from their friends, trying not to get "tagged." The child who is "It" must run after his peers, trying to touch, or "tag" someone. Once a child is tagged by whoever is "It," they become "It" until they tag someone. Use water balloons for a fun twist on the traditional version of this game during summer months. Fill water balloons for the child who is "It" to throw at opponents. The kid a balloon bursts on first becomes "It."
I Spy
Quell road trip boredom by playing I Spy. State, "I spy, with my little eye, something..." and finish the statement by naming the color or first letter of an item that you have spotted. The first child in the car that is able to name the object correctly gets to pick the next object for others to guess at.
Snakes in the Gutter
Snakes in the Gutter is an outdoor game that promotes physical activity and is best played during spring and summer months. Divide kids into two groups, ensuring that an equal number of kids belongs to each group. One group stands in a row with space between each of them: these are the "snakes." The other group of kids must try to run through the line of "snakes" without being touched by them. If a child is touched, she becomes a snake. The kids re-set and play another round. The kid that can keep from becoming a snake wins.
Scavenger Hunt
A neighborhood or backyard scavenger hunt is a fun kid activity, as well as a hit at parties. Plan a treasure hunt with map included, or create a decorative list so that the kids can identify which items they must search for. Strategically place items in areas that are hard to reach or find, giving clues for each item's whereabouts. Alternatively, have each child perform specific activities to win items or points. The child or team of children to collect the most points or items within a specified time frame wins a grand prize. Award all participants with a small parting gift for being good sports.
