Interactive Games to Teach Kindergaten Students About the National Holidays

Every year the calendar is dotted with national holidays. It is also dotted with opportunities for parents and teachers to enhance their lesson plans. There are several fun, interactive games that can be modified to teach kindergarten students about the national holidays.
  1. Scavenger Hunts

    • Scavenger hunts are a great way to help students burn off some energy as well as enlighten their minds. There are two main ways that scavenger hunts can be done: students can look for objects, or they must answer questions. The first option is the easiest, because simple words or pictures can be used to direct students. Educators can hide holiday-specific items such as pieces of Santa's clothes for Christmas or photos of U.S. presidents for Presidents Day. Since most kindergartners don't read quite yet, adults will have to help them out if educators go with the second option. The nice part of this option is that the questions can be customized to the holiday.

    Simon Says

    • This game is a longtime favorite of the playground set for many reasons. Kids love it because everyone has to do as the leader says; adults love it because it helps kids practice listening skills. "Simon Says" can be customized to the holiday as the theme of the day. If Christmas is approaching, the title can be changed to "Santa Says." The leader, or "head elf," gives directions from Santa to all the other elves. If one of the elves does an action that "Santa didn't say," he has to sit down.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

    • "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" is another old-favorite game at most kid parties. It doesn't have to be limited to birthday parties, though. This game can be changed in many ways that can enhance a lesson plan. "Pin the Clothes on the Pilgrim" is a great way to teach about the Pilgrim lifestyle around Thanksgiving. Educators can discuss who the Pilgrims were and what they wore. This game can be customized for any holiday. Presidents Day players can try to "Pin the Beard on Abe Lincoln" or "Put the Wig on George Washington." The options are unlimited for a creative educator.

    Puzzles

    • Jigsaw puzzles are a great activity for kindergarten students. While this activity gets kids to actually sit down for a moment, it also helps them practice spatial orientation and critical thinking skills. It can develop teamwork skills as well when used in group situations. Creating holiday themed puzzles is not difficult. There are several online resources that let educators download and print puzzle images. Educators can even let the students make the puzzles themselves by coloring the image, gluing it onto a backing and cutting it into puzzle pieces. Once the project is completed, students can trade their puzzles with classmates. This fun twist will help them develop their motor skills as well as enhance their knowledge of the holiday theme.
