Bible Games for Grades 4 to 6

It is often hard for elementary school age children to pay attention to Bible lessons at home and in Sunday school. Bible games engage children while reinforcing the lesson, verse or story they have just been taught. Many enjoyable and exciting Bible games are suitable for children in grades four, five and six.
  1. Jeopardy

    • If you have a small group of children, follow up a Bible lesson by putting a biblical twist on the television game show "Jeopardy." Prepare questions of different difficulties and point values; draw a chart on the blackboard naming the categories. Use marbles or coins in empty soda cans as buzzers, or just have the children raise their hands to answer questions. If you have more than three players, divide them into teams to take turns answering questions. Keep track of the points on the chalkboard, and provide a small reward for the winning team.

    Block Patterns

    • This Bible game emphasizes the notion that God guides all individuals in their pursuit of the truth if they listen to Him. Divide the children into two teams and provide each group with an identical set of building blocks. The teams should sit so that they can hear each other, but not see each other. The first team creates a design using the blocks, and must guide the second team to duplicate the design using only words. The teams can then switch places.

This game not only reminds children of the guidance offered by the Holy Spirit, it also practices problem-solving, listening and cooperation skills.

    Fishing

    • This Bible game is meant to accompany the lesson of Jesus choosing His disciples and making them "fishers of men" by allowing the children to become fishers of men for Jesus as well.

Have the children assist you with cutting six colorful fish shapes out of construction paper and labeling them with the first six books of the Bible. Attach a paper clip to each fish cutout. Cut a length of string for each child and tie a small magnet to the end of each one. Spread the construction-paper fish out on the floor and allow children to fish using the strings. As they are fishing, review the first six books of the Bible.

    The Desert

    • Teach children about the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering the desert with this engaging, active Bible game. Compile approximately 30 true-or-false questions before beginning the game. To play, line the children up against one wall and mark a line roughly 8 feet away from them, using masking or duct tape. Ask one of the questions, and have those who believe it is true raise their hand and those who believe it is false keep their hands down. Children who guess correctly take one small step toward the line.

Continue asking questions, and once a child has moved up from the wall, they must take one small step backward if he guesses an answer incorrectly. The goal of the game is for each child to make it to the line.
