Capture the Flag
"Capture the Flag" can be played with a large group. Start by dividing the children into two teams. Each team then establishes a home base, where its flag resides. The purpose of the game is to enter into the other team's territory and steal the flag from its home base without being tagged. When a player is tagged, she is sent to the opposing team's jail. To release a person from jail, a member of that player's own team must tag them. The first team to successfully capture the other team's flag wins. The only required equipment for "Capture the Flag" are two items to serve as flags.
Red Rover
"Red Rover" is another fun game that can be played with large groups. Start by dividing the children into two teams. Each team then holds hands and forms a line facing the other team. The lines should be at least 20 feet apart. Teams then take turns saying, "Red Rover, Red Rover, I call (child's name) over." The child called then runs toward the opposing team's line and attempts to break through one of the links made between two hands. If the child does not break through, he joins the opposing team. If the child does break through, he chooses a player of the opposing team to come to his team. The first team to have all of the players wins. No equipment is required.
Water Limbo
"Water Limbo" is a great game to play on a hot day. It is a simple variation on the traditional limbo game. A stream of water is used instead of a limbo stick. Children must attempt to make their way under the stream of water without getting wet. Alternatively, children can leap over the water. A supervising adult is recommended, to make sure that the grass or other surface doesn't become too slippery. The only equipment required is a hose that can shoot a straight stream of water. To conserve water, try aiming the hose so that it ends in a children's pool or other reservoir, so that the water can be used again.
Games Requiring Equipment
Some other popular outdoor games for children require a bit of equipment. Badminton is a fun way to improve hand-eye coordination, and all that is required is a net, a couple of rackets and birdie. Croquet and horseshoe sets are another inexpensive way for children to have to have some fun outdoors. Similarly, baseball has been popular for decades in America because all that's required to play it is a bat, a ball and a bit of open space. Soccer is probably the most popular outdoor game for kids around the world. All that's required to play soccer is a ball.
Other Popular Outdoor Games
Some outdoor games are so well known that no explanation is required. Such games include hide and seek, hopscotch, jump rope and Double Dutch, tag, freeze tag, Marco Polo and musical chairs.
