Games That Kids Play Indoors

There are a number of reasons why adults should know of a variety of indoor games that children would enjoy playing. If you are taking care of children and the weather is unfavorable for outdoor play or if you are trying to keep the kids inside because it is getting dark but they aren't ready to go to sleep, try suggesting some of these indoor games to help keep them occupied while they wind down.
  1. Active Games

    • Hide and Seek is played by one person "seeking" out the other players who are "hiding." The group of players determines a number for the "seeker" to count to while they hide. The "seeker" then goes out and searches for the hidden players. Players are disqualified from the game after they are discovered by the "seeker." Whoever remains hidden the longest wins and takes on the role of the "seeker" for the next game.

Duck, Duck, Goose is played seated in a circle. One player then stands and goes around the circle touching the tops of every player's head in the circle, saying "Duck." Eventually the player decides to say "Goose" and the "goose" then gets up and chases the player around the circle trying to tag the child who said "Goose." If the first child who said "Goose" makes it into the "goose's" spot in the circle and sits down, he gets to stay in the circle and the "goose"must now go around naming all of the other players "duck" or "goose."

    Classics

    • To play marbles, begin by sticking tape down to the floor to form the approximate shape of a circle. The marbles are placed in the circle and each player tries to toss a larger marble into the circle to push the marbles out of the boundary of the circle. Each player gets to keep the marbles they knock out of the circle and the game continues until all of the marbles are collected. Whoever ends up with the most marbles wins.

Pickup Sticks is played with a pile of sticks that are dropped on the floor. Each player takes a turn trying to use the black stick to pickup as many of the sticks on the floor as possible without moving and the sticks around it. A turn lasts until a player moves any of the sticks surrounding the stick they are picking up. When all the sticks have been picked up, the one with the most sticks wins.

    Card Games

    • The objective of the card game Go Fish is to end up with the most pairs. Every player is dealt five cards. Each player gets a chance to ask one of the other players for a card that he already has. If the other players have the card they must give it to the player who asked. If the first player receives cards when they ask, they get to ask for another card. If the other players do not have the card that was asked for they say, "Go fish," and the player that asked for the card draws another card from the deck. If they get a pair from that card they have another turn. If they don't get a pair, the next player then asks for a card.

War is played by two players who are dealt 26 shuffled cards each. Each player lays down a card from the top of his deck at the same time so both players can see it. The player that lays down the higher card collects both cards and adds them to their pile. When players lay down the same valued cards, they must put down three more cards face-down and turn over the fourth card so it can be seen. The player with the higher card takes all of the their opponent's cards played in that round. The game is won by the player that has the most cards at the end of a pre-set time, or by the player who gets the entire deck.

    Board Games

    • In Scrabble, players create words vertically or horizontally with the seven lettered tiles they have and using at least one letter from the words that have already been created on the game board. Every letter tile has points assigned to it and the objective of the game is to use the most points in creating your words on the game board, which itself has point bonuses for when words occupy certain spaces.

Candy Land is a game where the players draw cards and move their pieces along the game board according to the cards they draw or follow the instructions given on the drawn cards. Some cards may instruct players to stay on a specific spot or move back. Whoever reaches the end space first wins.
