Fun Childhood Games

One of the greatest joys of childhood is being able to play a game with the simple goal of pleasure and amusement in mind. While many of the most popular childhood games may be considered "pointless," it is through game play that children learn about social interaction and the world in general. There are countless childhood games that may be "classics" but still remain fun today.
  1. Capture the Flag

    • This classic game never gets old and can be played with large or small groups, with boys or girls and with virtually any age group. The game involves splitting all participants into two groups to create two teams. Each team is given a flag to hide somewhere within the playing area (usually a backyard, field, or wide open space.) The object of the game is to capture the opposite team's flag without getting caught by a member of the opposing team and being eliminated from the game. The first team to capture their opponents' flag wins.

    Tag

    • An oldie but a goodie, tag is a game that allows children to exert energy and exercise all while having a great time. The concept of the game is easy: one person is "It" and every other participant must be avoid being touched by this person by running from him. If another player is touched, she becomes It. One great thing about Tag is that there are endless modifications to the game: freeze tag, multiple taggers, etc.

    Duck, Duck, Goose

    • This is one fun childhood game that works best with a younger audience but is equally amusing when played with an older group of children as well. Duck, Duck, Goose involves participants sitting in a circle with one player walking around the exterior of the circle patting each participant on the head saying, "Duck." At one point, she will instead choose to say, "Goose." If a participant is tagged as a goose, that person must get up and chase the first player around the exterior of the circle before the first player can sit back down in the spot where the "Goose" participant had been sitting. The game can be modified using particular children's like or dislikes, such as "Chocolate, Chocolate, Vanilla," or "Sweater, Sweater, T-Shirt."

    Charades

    • A creative, intelligent childhood game that can be wildly fun is charades. The game works better with older children because some of the concepts can be difficult to grasp for very young children. Charades is simple and free; basically every participant has a chance to be "It." When he is it, he must act out a person, place or thing without saying a word. Its is up to the rest of the participants to try and guess what the person is trying to mimic. The participant who guesses correctly is the winner, and both she and the charade actor get a point. The game should go on for a predetermined number of turns or amount of time before a winner is declared.
