Games That Teach Kids How to Run a Business

Children not only need reading, writing and math skills; they need skills in real-world subjects such as running a business. There are games that children can play that can help them grasp the fundamentals of business management.
  1. Monopoly Junior

    • "Monopoly Junior," the internationally known, classic real estate game, is actually a decent teaching tool for young children. The junior version of the game is much simpler but still allows children to develop skills in counting money, budgeting and making business decisions. The game costs about $10 and can be played by two, three or four players between the ages of 5 and 8. Other versions of "Monopoly" may also be appropriate for some older children.

    The Sims Business Games

    • For children who enjoy video games, the Sims line of interactive games includes a few business-related titles. One of these is "The Sims 2: Open For Business." In this game, players can open and operate a variety of businesses, from a clothing store to a restaurant. Players must manage inventory, purchase goods, operate a store, hire and fire employees and perform other business tasks. This game is available on a number of gaming platforms (XBox and Playstation) and on the PC. The game is better suited to teens.

    TeachingKidsBusiness.com

    • TeachingKidsBusiness.com is a website that has a free, online game called "Just For Clicks Business." The game allows players to create, market and sell a product of their own design using tools built into the game. The game can be played by both children and teens.

    Fedville

    • The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has a website called Fedville that has several activities that teach children business skills. The activities are incorporated into the town of Fedville. For instance, the town movie theater shows educational movies about saving money, and the town bank allows children to take out cash to spend or invest. The games are designed to be played by children of all ages. The Fedville website also requires Flash in order to be used properly.
