Award Winning Games for Kids

The best children's games not only engage and entertain, but also educate---especially when kids don't realize they're actually learning something while they play. Choosing a game for your child may seem daunting given the sheer volume of games on the market, but there are award-giving organizations that make things easier by singling out excellence in children's games.
  1. Parents' Choice Awards

    • The Parents' Choice Awards is America's oldest nonprofit program devoted to honoring quality in children's media. As well as researching television, books and toys, the Parents' Choice Awards also presents accolades to outstanding children's games. Among the games that have received awards from this organization are Fat Brain Toys' Acuity, HABA's Mummy's Treasure Game, MindWare's Q-Bitz, Blue Orange Games' SPOT IT! and Sumoko, also from Blue Orange Games. All these creative games have been recognized by the Parents' Choice Awards for their high educational value and level of child engagement.

    Amazing Toy Awards

    • The parenting website Kaboose.com hands out its own awards, the Amazing Toy Awards. Awards are given for toys in different categories for different age groups, including babies, toddlers, elementary school age, and teens and tweens. Winners of past awards include Mattell's Uno Flash, Educational Insight's Pixel, Discovery Bay's Be Rhymed and Gameright's Tiki Topple. According to the Kaboose site, these games were rated exceptionally high by toy-testers, who looked for games that were affordable, encouraged skill development and had the potential for longevity.

    Toty Awards

    • The Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards are presented by the Toy Industry Association Inc., a trade association for North American makers and importers of toys and games. The awards ceremony takes place each year in conjunction with the American International Toy Fair, typically held in New York City. The group recently selected University Games' Sort It Out! as winner of its Game of the Year category, which recognizes outstanding children's board games, card games, CD-ROMs and electronic games.

    Good Housekeeping Research Institute

    • The Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI) also compiles an annual list of the year's best toys, with 98 children (ranging in age from 4 to 16) putting a variety of toys to the test. Criteria include fun factor, skill-building and how well a game encourages children to use their imaginations. Children's games that received Good Housekeeping's endorsement include Techno Source's Bubble Talk, Wiggles 3D's Lexigo and Educational Insights' Blurt!
