Traditional
The traditional version of Follow the Leader is done by choosing a leader and having the rest of the group follow the actions of the leader. The leader can jump, do apple jacks, turn in circles, or anything that is easy for a group to follow. The idea is to get gradually faster and to add two activities together such as jump and turn in a circle. You can choose to play this game by randomly choosing leaders or you can do it so if someone does not follow the leader he is out of the game and the last child standing wins.
Piano
Follow the Leader can be played on the piano. This Follow the Leader game builds memory skills as well as musical skills. Play any group of keys. Have the child repeat the notes you played. For example if you play fingers 1 1 5 5 have the child repeat that pattern. Use different patterns and various speeds and challenge the child to match your choices.
Clean Up
For younger children, playing Follow the Leader to help them learn how to clean up will prove to be beneficial for all parties involved. After they have learned the basic Follow the Leader game, have them follow the leader by taking their plates to the kitchen and putting their trash in the trashcan. You might also consider adding a cleanup song such as "clean up clean up, everybody do your share, clean up clean up, everybody everywhere."
Blindman
Divide the children into teams of two. Blindfold one member of each team. Make sure to set up some type of simple obstacle course ahead of time. The goal is for the member of the team that is not blindfolded to lead the blindfolded member through the obstacle course using only words for directions. You could make this a timed game and the team that makes it through the fastest wins, but keep safety in mind as you do not want the children falling and getting hurt.
