Russian Children's Games

Russian children's games are often strikingly similar to the ones played by children in North America. The difference is often in the name of the game rather than the rules. Russian games for kids include games such as tag, tongue twisters and songs that accompany actions.
  1. The Bear

    • "The Bear" is similar to the American children's game, "What Time Is It Mr. Wolf?" in which children ask the wolf the time, the wolf screams "Lunchtime!" and chases them. In this game, children sing that they are going to take away the bear's berries and mushrooms. When the children are close enough, the bear becomes "angry" and chases the children. The child that is caught becomes the bear.

    Wizards

    • This game is very similar to freeze tag. The children run away from the wizard, who "freezes" them upon contact. The child must then remain unmoving in this position while crying, "Help me!" If another child runs over and touches him, he is free to move again. The game ends when all of the children have been frozen by the wizard and there is no one left to free them.

    Boaire

    • This game is very similar to Red Rover in that there are two sides that line up and face each other. Each side calls out a name in turn and the child tries to break through the opposite line. If the child can break through the others' linked hands, the child picks a new person to bring to their side. If the child fails to break through, it is her turn to join the opposing side. The interesting twist on this game is that it is said that it represents the requesting of a bride from a neighboring village.

    Tchaikovsky Twinkle

    • This game is based upon the name of the Russian composer Tchaikovsky. It is played by trying to find as many new words as possible from the letters contained in the name "Tchaikovsky." You are only allowed to use the letters that appear within the word and only as often as they appear. For example, you can use the letter "K" twice but the letter "A" only once. The person (or team) with the most words wins a point. The next rounds are played with the last names of other famous composers.
