Beanbag Tic-Tac-Toe
Create a tic-tac-toe board on the floor using masking tape. Or, use chalk to create a board on a sidewalk or asphalt. Divide children into two teams. Have each team line up behind a line a short distance from the board. Provide each team with five beanbags. Each team should have beanbags of a different color. Players on each team take turns tossing beanbags onto the board. The first team to have three beanbags in a row, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, wins.
Octopus
This game is best played in a large area. Have the children stand at one end of the room. Select one child to be "it." This child stands in the middle of the room. When he or she calls "Octopus!" all of the children must run to the opposite wall. If they are tagged, they join the child in the center of the room and help him or her catch others during the next round. The game continues until all children have been tagged.
Hide the Button
Select one child to be the "hider." This person hides a button in the room. The remaining children close their eyes but listen for clues about where the hider is going with the button. Instruct everyone to open their eyes once the button is hidden. The children search for the button. The hider helps the children by telling them they are cold when they are far away from the button and hot when they are close to it. The person who finds the button is the hider during the next round.
Alphabet Bingo
Create bingo cards by drawing four horizontal lines and four vertical lines on bristol board or cardstock. Write the word "Bingo" across the top of each card. Randomly print a letter in each space. Create small cards with each letter of the alphabet or use ready-made letter tiles or magnetic letters. Place them in a bag. Provide each child with a bingo card and a handful of chips or other items to place on their cards. Play a traditional game of bingo by drawing letters from the bag. The first child to get a row of chips wins.
