Fun Math Games to Play

Math games are an exciting outlet for your children or students to learn all types of math problems, from simple subtraction to fractions. Math games not only inspire quick thinking but they also encourage a healthy competitive drive. Math games can range from a classic board game, to a relay made from scratch. Games are also a tool for the parent or instructor to gauge how much the child has learned.
  1. Monopoly

    • The classic game of Monopoly is a great way for children to learn how to count and manage money. Not only do children have to count spaces on the board in order to move the play piece, but they are also required to keep track of their money. To help your child practice counting skills, ask him to be the banker so that the practice of counting is continuous throughout the game. Money management strategies will also come into effect through the buying, selling, and trading of properties versus the amount of money that goes into his personal bank.

    Number Bingo

    • Create or purchase a set of flash cards for you to hold with multiplication, addition, subtraction, or division problems. Make a set of bingo cards that hold the answers to math problems. Give your students bingo cards and beans or tokens to place on the spaces. Hold up the flash cards or state the math problem to your students and require them to place the token on the space that they believe holds the correct answer. When a student has a bingo, require him or her to read off the answers. It's wise to have a list of answers beside you so that you don't have to review each individual card for affirmation.

    Online Games

    • Many websites host a variety of free math games complete with an ideal age in mind. These are perfect for school or home activities as they help children to brush up on math knowledge while having fun. Many of the games include a host of fun characters or automobiles that will keep your child interested and competitive. Other games are more ordinary, though just as educational, such as those that teach the basic concept of counting money or those that contain timed online flash cards.

    Math Relay Race

    • Divide your classroom into two equal teams and have the children line up one after another on opposite sides of the room. Ask one child at a time, from each team, to step forward and answer the problem that you give from a flash card. Whoever answers the question first is awarded a point for the team. You can end the game by allowing everyone a turn or two, or by setting a point maximum.
