Games to Play at Festivals With Kids

Festivals are a long-standing tradition where families can enjoy a variety of food and cultural activities and play games together. Depending on the season and the type of festival, the games may vary. Often the games are divided into age groups so the competition is fair and everyone has a chance to win.
  1. Races

    • Children love to run. A relay race is a team effort and you can use anything for the relay -- a stick, a wet sponge, corn on the cob or a banana. Each team has four kids set a various points along the race area. The first child starts off with the item in his hand and passes it off to the child at the next point; that child will hand it off to the next and so on until the fourth child reaches the finish line. The team whose fourth child comes in first wins. Another traditional race is the three-legged race. Two kids are bound by a rope at the ankle. One uses her right leg, the other her left. They wrap arms around each other's waist to hold each other up and race to the finish line.

    Wheelbarrow Obstacle Course

    • Two children can play this game. One sits in the wheelbarrow with a bucket of water and the other child steers around the obstacles placed along the course. The object of the game is to spill as little water as possible in the least amount of time. This game can also involve one child at a time with just the bucket in the wheelbarrow.

    Tug of War

    • Tug of war is an old and common game at picnics and festivals. Two teams of children that are of approximate equal weight position themselves on either side of a long rope. Tie a cloth flag in the middle of the rope with enough space on either side for each team to pull. Draw lineson both sides. The object is to pull the opposing team over their line. Sometimes people play the game with the flag placed over a puddle of mud and each team tries to pull the other into the mud.

    Cherry Eating

    • Fill a large bowl with water and put about 50 cherries in the water. The object of the game is to get the cherries out of the water using only the mouth and no hands. The children have to eat the cherries and then spit the pits onto a plate or in a bucket for points. They can do this individually or in teams. Hiding the cherries in whipped cream is another way to play this game if you prefer a slightly more messy cherry game.
