Fun Water Games to Play With Kids Ages 4 & 5

Nothing cools young children off on a hot summer day better than water games. Four- and five-year-olds will enjoy these fun water games at a birthday party or your next get-together. Not only will the games cool the kids off, it allows them a chance to make new friends. A few supplies and exuberant children in their bathing suits ready to get wet are all you need to get started.
  1. Water Hose Limbo

    • Have an adult hold a water hose and place his finger over the end to create a stream, or use a water hose nozzle that squirts a straight line of water. The children line up on one side of the water line and wait their turn. One at a time, each child has to go under the water line without touching the water. After each child goes under the water, lower the water level down an inch and have him try again. If a child touches the water, he is out of the game. The child who can go the lowest without touching the water wins the game.

    Dribble, Dribble, Drench

    • Play "dribble, dribble, drench" like the game of "duck, duck, goose." Have all the children sit in a circle on their bottoms. Select one child to go first and give her a cup of water. As she walks around the circle, she says, "Dribble, dribble," while putting dribbles of water on each child's head. When she says, "Drench," she must pour the cup of water on that child's head and run around the circle. If the player she pours water on catches her before she returns to her seat, she is "it" again. If she makes it back to her seat before the other player tags her, the other player is the new "it." Give that player a cup of water and she starts the next round.

    Sprinkler Tug O' War

    • Divide the children into two teams and place a large rope across the play area. Have each team get on opposite sides of the rope and place a sprinkler that shoots up in the middle of the rope. Have all the children hang on to their side of the rope and turn the sprinkler on. When you say, "Pull," both teams pull as hard as they can to try to pull the other team into the water sprinkler.

    Water Sponge Tag

    • Place a large bucket of water in the middle of the yard with a large sponge in the bucket. Select one player to be "it" and give him the sponge. When you say, "Go," he dips the sponge in the bucket of water and tries to tag a player using the wet sponge. If he tags someone (by hitting them with the wet sponge), that person is the new "it" player, and he must get the sponge wet before trying to tag another player.
