Fun Games for Little Children

Young children have vivid imaginations. They are easily entertained by simple games if the other players are having a good time, too. Games that benefit younger kids the most are those that offer some sort of skill building along with entertainment. Many games teach young kids hand-eye coordination, vocabulary and listening skills while inspiring laughter.
  1. Pillow Throw

    • The Pillow Throw game is highly entertaining for young children. It also helps develop their hand-eye coordination and sense of spacial awareness. The Pillow Throw game can be played with 2 or more players. All you need is a spacious area and many throwable pillows. One person sits on the bed or couch and throws pillows at the other moving players, trying to hit them with the pillows. Each player that is hit is out. Remove any breakable items and sharp-edged furniture from the play area.

    The Listening Game

    • The Listening Game can be played indoors or outdoors with two players. It helps develop children's listening identification skills and vocabulary. If there are more than two players, break the children up into teams of two. One player on the team must close her eyes while the other player makes a sound with a nearby item. For example, the first player might shake some keys, while the second player tries to recognize the sound and identify the object.

What Time is it, Mr. Wolf?

    • What Time is it, Mr. Wolf? is a classic children's game suitable for outdoors or large indoor spaces. One child is selected to be Mr. Wolf and stands facing away from the other children at the end of the playing space. The other children stand in a line at the other end of the playing space facing Mr. Wolf. They begin the game by asking "What time is it, Mr. Wolf?" Mr. Wolf then replies with a time; for example, "It's 3 o'clock." When he answers, the children must step ahead toward him that number of steps. However, at any time Mr. Wolf may say "It's lunch time!" At this point, Mr. Wolf can turn around and try to tag one of the children. If he succeeds, the tagged child becomes Mr. Wolf. If he does not tag anyone before they return to the base line, he must be Mr. Wolf again.

    Stuffed Animal Find

    • The Stuffed Animal Find game encourages children to use their sense of touch to identify their favorite toy. This game may be difficult for some children who cannot part with their favorite toys, so have some other stuffed animals on hand they can borrow. Each child places her stuffed animal in a large bin with the other children's stuffed animals. The stuffed animals are mixed up and the children are blindfolded. The pile of stuffed animals is dumped in front of the blindfolded children and they must search through the toys to find their stuffed animal through touch, without peeking. Remove the blindfolds when everyone has a toy and see who has who's toy.

    Newspaper Golf

    • Newspaper Golf is a skill building game for young kids. All it requires is newspaper, masking tape and a few small balls. Newspaper Golf helps develop children's hand-eye coordination and spacial awareness. Roll up several pieces of newspaper and tape them together to form golf clubs. Mark several spots on the floor with circles of masking tape to represent holes. Use the newspaper golf clubs to hit tennis balls, ping pong balls, golf balls or other small balls into the holes. The first player to hit the ball into each hole wins a treat.
