Board Games
A fun board game for second graders is Scrabble Junior. This game includes a board filled with colorful pictures and words already printed on it and helps second graders learn to spell by matching their letter tiles with the letters printed on the board. Players receive a score chip when they add a letter that completes a word. The player with the most chips when the board is filled is the winner.
Card Games
Yes, No, You Got It is a card game that allows second graders to use number sense and logic. For this game a dealer selects a card from a deck and each player asks questions to figure out the card. Example questions and answers are "Is the card greater than six?" (no), "Is it red?" (yes), "Is it a 10 of hearts?" (You got it.) The card is given to the player who guesses it and the winner and new dealer is the first person to guess 10 cards.
Computer Games
Jump Start 2nd Grade computer software is filled with fun interactive games to help your second grader learn math, science, grammar and other skills. There are 22 educational game challenges lead by CJ the Frog and his friend Edison to help players score points and earn certificates that can be printed out. Children learn parts of speech, addition, subtraction, multiplication, social science, writing, geography, musical scales and complex vowels.
Classroom Games
Heads Up Seven Up is a classroom favorite that's fun and easy enough for second graders. Seven students are selected to go around the room and touch the tip of a classmate's thumb while the other students are at their desk with their heads down and thumbs up. Once a student's thumb has been touched, he puts it down. After all seven students are finish touching a thumb, they stand at the front of the room and say, "Heads up seven." The seven students whose thumbs were touched stand up and try to guess one at a time who chose them. If they guess correctly they go up to be a chooser and the person who touched them sits in their seat. After all seven students are done guessing who chose them, play again. Keep playing this way as many times as you like.
