Fun Activities for School-Age Kids

Kids get bored easily playing with the same toys or games. However, school-age kids can learn to play fun games, which promote teamwork, problem solving, listening skills and motor skills. Kids can learn to take leadership rolls, which can be beneficial for a developing child. These fun activities help stimulate a child's mind and promote healthy weight.
  1. Ready, Aim, Throw

    • A minimum of four children can participate in this fun activity. Have the kids partner up, with one child in each group carrying a foam ball and wearing a blindfold. The partner who can see will help by telling the child wearing the blindfold the location of the ball and direct them to throw it at another blindfolded player. He can also tell the child where to go, so he can avoid the ball. Make sure to have the partner who can see lead his partner a few feet away from other players to avoid collision or injuries. Blindfolded players hit more than once will be out of the game; this includes their partner. Once the game ends, partners switch positions.

    Tag You're It

    • Tag is a game that provides endless fun for school-age kids. Specify the location of where they will play. Decide which child will be "it," i.e., the tagger. The game begins with the one who is "it" yelling "Go" and chasing the other players. Once the child tag's someone, he will yell "Tag, you're it." This causes the tagged player to become "it." The game ends when the players are too tired to play or if they have tagged everyone.

    Bottle Bowling

    • Kids can play this game in a variety of ways. The items needed are six or more two-liter plastic bottles and a few tennis balls. Line up the bottles in a triangle formation. From a safe distance, have your child either roll or throw the ball at the bottles. Another way to play this game is by lining up the bottles in a straight line and rolling the ball towards it. Have an identical number of kids on either side of the bottles. Have one set of kids throw the balls at the bottle. The kids who knock the bottles down the pins the fastest or with the most strikes (all pins knocked down) wins. They can also win by the number of pins they've knocked down, much like real bowling.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Scavenger hunt is a fun activity for school-age kids. It teaches them problem-solving and promotes teamwork. Scavenger hunt can be played by one or more children. Choose a few ordinary household items and hide them where they can be found with little effort from the child. The first step of the game requires the child to leave the search area. Write down the missing items and give it to the kids to find them. If it is too difficult for the kids to find the items, give them clues or riddles to find them.
