Fun Games for Kids 9-13

Kids between the ages of 9 and 13 might not be ready for grown-up games, but they are too old for kiddie games. Preteens and teens can enjoy games that build their social skills, increase their attention spans and build their motor skills. Not only are the games great for social bonding, but they will keep your kids active and healthy.
  1. Cherry Game

    • Play the cherry game outside with a 5-lb. bag of flour, maraschino cherries, newspaper and a butter knife (use a plastic butter knife, if preferred). Spread the newspaper out and pour the flour in a pile on the newspaper. Use your hands to build the flour into a tight pyramid. Put a maraschino cherry on top of the flour. Each kid must take turns using a butter knife to cut a section of the flour off the pyramid. Tell the kids to be careful when cutting the flour, because if they are the one who makes the cherry fall, they must pick it up with their teeth and eat it.

    Marble Bowling

    • Children can play a game of marble bowling outdoors or indoors with a bag of marbles. Place a white marble in the middle of the play area and a standing line about 20 feet from that marble. Each player must select a marble from the bag. Players must roll their marble from the starting line toward the white marble. The player who lands his marble closest to the white marble wins the game.

    Head Bowl Catch

    • Make head bowls by having an adult glue the bottoms of two plastic bowls together. Have all players select a partner and give one person in each pair a head bowl. One partner holds the head bowl on his head, while the other player tries to toss items in it. Give the players a bowl of raisins, grapes or small candy pieces to try to toss in the bowls. When you say, "Go," each player must try to toss as many items into his partner's head bowl as he can. At the end of five minutes, the team who has the most items in the bowl wins the game.

    Ice Cube Game

    • For a hot summer day, fill a small plastic swimming pool with water and a bag of ice. Place a small round pan on the outside of the pool. Each kid has one minute to get in the pool with her bare feet and try to pick up as many ice cubes as she can. The players must pick the ice cubes up using only their feet and drop them in the pan to count. Count each kid's ice cubes and the player who has the most ice cubes after one minute wins the game.
