Outside Games & Activities for Kids

Encourage your kids to play outdoors with a variety of exciting games. Outdoor games and activities keep your children healthy and in shape. From a game of crazy item bowling to some bubble fun, your imagination and a few supplies are all you need to get your children of all ages out from in front of the television.
  1. Crazy Item Bowling

    • Place several items, such as an empty milk carton, a plastic vase, an empty oatmeal container, a book and a doll (that stands) in the shape of a triangle on the ground. Put the items on concrete or hard ground to help them stand up. Give each player a volleyball, baseball or tennis ball to try to knock down the items. The players have two tries to knock down items and the player who knocks down the most items wins the game.

    Outdoor Picnic

    • Create an outdoor picnic for your children to enjoy. Fill a picnic basket with sandwiches, chips, fruit, juice and napkins. Spread a large blanket in the backyard and tell the children to enjoy their picnic. After the kids eat their meal, help them make s'mores using a small charcoal grill. Light some charcoal and place large marshmallows on the end of coat hangers. Help the children heat up the marshmallows and press them between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate.

    Categories

    • Have all the kids stand in a circle and hand one kid a ball, such as a basketball, soccer ball or volleyball. The player who has the ball says a category, such as "sports." He tosses the ball to a player in the circle and that player must name a sport before tossing the ball to the next person. If a player takes longer than one minute or does not have an answer, he is out of the game. The last player who named a correct sport chooses the next category. The last player standing wins the game.

    Bubble Fun

    • Fill a plastic swimming pool with bubble solution or make your own solution by mixing 2/3 cup of dishwashing liquid, 3 tbsp. of glycerin and 1 gallon of water. Mix the solution well and toss in items, such as pieces of PVC pipe, badminton rackets, potato mashers, bubble wands, fly swatters, spatulas and slotted spoons. The children can enjoy making bubbles with these random items.
