Verbal Memory Games

Developing verbal and memory skills is vital to a child's cognitive development. You can encourage these developments in your children or in your classroom by playing games intended to exercise the memory and recall abilities. As a side benefit, these kinds of games are often fun for kids and offer a diversion from more outright educational activities.
  1. The Story Game

    • Have the players hear a short story. As the story is being read, write questions that relate to the story. Range the questions from simple and easy to challenging and detailed. Once the story is over, ask questions, starting with simple ones and working your way up to the harder ones. Ask one question per player and repeat the questioning until a player gets a question wrong. This player is eliminated. The last player left is the winner.

    The Description Game

    • This game can be played with two players. The first player writes down a detailed description of a person or thing. The first player reads it to the second player. Wait 30 seconds after the description has been read, then the first player will ask questions of the second player like "what color were the buttons on the person's shirt" or "How tall was the object in the description."

    Simon Says

    • This game can be played with any group size of players and one player as the caller or "Simon." The group of players stands in front of "Simon" and follow the commands "Simon" gives. Every time "Simon" gives a command, the players will have to repeat all of the commands in the order they were given. If a player makes a mistake or forgets, they will be out of the game and have to sit down. To make it easier for "Simon," the movements can be written down to be read from later.

    Telephone

    • This game can be played with any number of players, but the more the better. The players sit next to each other in a line. The first player sits on the far end of the group. The first player writes a short message on a piece of paper they can only see. They will then whisper the message into the ear of the player next to them. That player will then whisper the same message as they heard it to the player next to them. Repeat this until the message reaches the last player on the end. The last player will then say out loud the message they heard.
