Easy Playground Summer Games

Whether you're in charge of a summer camp for children or you just want to introduce some easy, new playground games to your kids, it can be challenging to find games that hold the attention of energized children. With a few simple household items or items easily bought at your local store, playground games can continue for hours.
  1. Recover the Flag

    • Recover the flag is a game for two teams. One team hides the flag while the other team covers their eyes. You can decide the time limit for how long each team has for hiding the flag. When the flag is hidden, the other team has a set amount of time to try and find the flag. If the flag is found, that team receives a point. If the flag is not found, the team who hid the flag receives a point.

    Color Tag

    • Color tag is a game best played with soft multi-colored balls and a large bucket. Place the balls in the bucket and choose one person as the bucket protector. The bucket protector closes his eyes, and everyone takes a ball from the bucket until all of the balls are taken. The bucket protector opens his eyes and then yells out a color. Everyone with that color ball tries to get the ball back in the bucket without getting tagged by the bucket protector. Players can throw the balls, but if they fall outside the bucket they must be picked up by the person who tossed it. Each person who gets tagged sits out until there is only one player left. That person becomes the bucket protector in the next game.

    Wiffle Golf

    • Wiffleball golf is a perfect game for the outdoors, because you need a lot of open space to play it. Place hula hoops or other large, circular objects out in a field as if they're bases on a baseball field: first, second, third and home base. Each player stands in the home base area and hits a wiffle ball to try to get it in the first base area. Each player must get the wiffle ball into the first base hoop before moving on to the second base hoop, and so on. At each milestone, each player hits her ball from where it last landed. The player to round the bases first and arrive home is the winner.

    Bean Bag Hula Toss

    • Bean bag hula toss can be played with as many hula hoops and bean bags as you desire. You can customize the game to your liking. Each player gets the same number of bean bags. Place one or more hula hoops in front of each player and see who can get the most bean bags inside of the hula hoop. If you place more than one hula hoop in front of each player, place them in a vertical manner. For a more challenging game, increase the space between each hoop and assign an amount of points to each one, the hoop furthest away being worth the most amount of points. Whoever gets the most points is the winner.
