Games for Kindergarten & First Grade

Any sort of game is fun to kids in kindergarten and first grade. However, if you want to boost their social skills and offer an educational slant in some cases, play games tailored for this age group. Always make sure to thoroughly explain the rules of the game prior to play to prevent confusion and to ensure everyone has fun.
  1. Bee Buzzing Game

    • Have the children in the class sit down on the floor as a group and call this the hive. Pick one of the kids to be the first player. He will close his eyes or wear a blindfold. Hand one of the kids sitting in the hive a small object like a ring, coin or rubber ball. Let the player remove the blindfold or uncover his eyes and tell him he will need to find out which one of the bees in the hive has the hidden object. The closer the player gets to the object, the bees will buzz louder. Let the player walk around the group and as they get close to the object, instruct the kids in the hive to buzz louder. Once the player finds the object, pick a new player and repeat.

    Bob the Weasel

    • Have the class sit on the floor in a large close circle. Pick one of the kids to sit in the middle to be "Bob." Hand one of the children in the circle a coin or rubber ball. The children in the circle will then pass the object around behind their backs as they chant "Bob the weasel... Keep it going... Keep it going." As they chant, "Bob" will close his eyes and slowly spin. Tell "Bob" to open his eyes and guess the person who has the object. Keep this up until "Bob" guesses right. The child with the object will now be "Bob."

    Musical Chairs

    • Ask the children to use their chairs to make a large circle with the seats facing out. Pick one of the chairs and remove it. Have the kids stand in a ring around the chairs. Play a song on a radio or boom box and have the children dance around the circle of chairs. Tell the children that when you stop the song, they have to quickly sit down in a chair and the last one standing will be out this round. Stop the song when you're ready. Ask the kid out to sit with you and remove one of the chairs. Repeat this until you're left with one child standing.

    Snowball Fight

    • Have the class collect old newspapers and paper that will be recycled. Use masking tape to make a large square then divide the square into four. Have the children make four even teams and stand in one of the four sections of the square as a team, with only one team per section. Hand each team a stack of paper. Tell the teams that when you say, "Go" they are to crumple the paper and throw it at the other team's section for three minutes. After three minutes, everyone freezes. Count how many "snow balls" are in each section. The team with the least amount will win a point. The team with two points first wins the game.
