Obstacle Course
Set up a challenging obstacle course in your backyard, using hula hoops, sports balls, a jump rope and kickball bases. Run as fast as you can through an imaginary ring of fire, weave in an out of enormous boulders, jump from rock tower to rock tower over magnificent canyons and watch out for the pretend alligators, as you walk across your rope bridge. Imagination and creativity make this game a winner.
Legg Volleyball
On a dreary and rainy day, play a safe indoor game like 'Legg Volleyball.' Inflate a white balloon to resemble an egg shape. Form all players into two teams onto the floor, while leaning back onto your hands. Use only your legs to kick the egg from side to side. A net or barrier made of string will separate the teams during play. Keep score, and the first team to reach ten points in their 'Legg Volleyball' game is the winning team.
Backyard Bowling
Gather empty 2-liter soda bottles from your home or neighborhood and start bowling. Invite your child's friends to knock over these homemade pins using a kickball, beach ball or an over-sized play ball. As a variation on the game, children may somersault into the pins instead of kicking a ball into them.
Flying Saucers
Decorate paper plates with various art supplies. Perfect your throwing arm while flying your saucer across the backyard. The child who tosses their Frisbee the furthest is the winner. In case of inclement weather, this game may be played indoors under adult supervision.
