House Games for Children

During a rainy day, or any day where the best option is to stay close to home, there are interesting activities to play with your children that don't involve a lot of planning or resources that you can't find at home. Get creative and active with your kids.
  1. Build a Fort

    • Don't be afraid to get in there with your kids.

Build a fort with your children. Have the base be a large room, such as a family room, and use couch cushions, blankets, chairs, TV dinner tables and anything else you can imagine, to create the perfect dwelling full of nooks and maze-like corridors. Allow the kids to decide the type of room, and what characters you are while building it.

    Create a Theatrical Production

    • Find great costumes for the children. And dress up yourself.

Help the children to come up with a script for an exciting play. Allow them to recite a funny story while you type it on the computer. Then, use this script as a basis for determining characters and the direction the play will take. Make props and find costumes. Make sure the children are involved in the process. If possible, perform for the neighbors, or film the production and show it to family and relatives on a special "screening night" that includes special drinks and refreshments. This can also be done with puppets, if performing in person is too scary.

    Play the Question Game

    • Think of interesting places or things to guess.

If there are several children in attendance, play this house game. Send one of the children out of the room. The rest of the children should decide on a person, place or thing. When the child returns, he or she must ask yes or no questions to determine what the item is. Is it a person? No. Is it a place? Yes. Do we have one in town? Yes.

    Scrapbook

    • Pull out all the craft supplies and design great photos.

Scrapbook together. Use photos you've taken with the family and allow your children to help you decorate the photos and pages with stickers, crayons, markers, glitter, and whatever you can think of. Have them write funny captions below the pictures and word bubbles with what people were thinking in the photos. This will be a special memory for the kids that they can keep on their bookshelves and pull out to share with friends.

    Musical House

    • Get creative with what household props to use.

Put on your children's favorite music and play musical furniture with them. This game is along the lines of musical chairs, but is not limited to a few chairs in a circle. Decide on a specific number of pieces of furniture throughout the house including sofas, beds, toilet seats and the kitchen table. It should be one less than the number of family members or friends over to play. Turn up the music and have everyone run from room to room to sit on or touch each piece of designated furniture. When the music stops, the person who is out can be the music player, and must choose one piece of furniture that is eliminated from the game. Continue to play, each time eliminating a person and household item, until a winner is determined.
