How to Create Free Crossword Puzzles for Children

Crossword puzzles are an excellent way of getting children to think about words or themes that they are learning about. It is a great tool for spelling, vocabulary and even reading classes. Parents and teachers can easily create crossword puzzles using any of crossword puzzle makers that are now available on the Internet. Choose a theme for your crossword puzzle, such as astronomy, parts of speech or characters from a novel. Name your puzzle and then let the online resources assist you in creating a custom crossword puzzle for your children.

Instructions

  1. Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker

    • 1

    • 2

Choose a title for your crossword puzzle that demonstrates the major theme of your crossword puzzle and enter the title into the first blank field. For example, if you are creating a crossword puzzle about the solar system, the crossword puzzle could be titled "Our Solar System."

    • 3

Determine the size of your crossword puzzle. If you would like to use a lot of words in your puzzle, a larger size would be best. If you are working with younger children, a smaller size puzzle would be best.

    • 4

Input the words and clues that will make up your crossword puzzle into the fourth field on the website. A good word for a solar system themed crossword puzzle is "Earth," which would then be followed by the clue "Third planet from the sun."

    • 5

Click the "Create My Puzzle" button and view your puzzle. If you are satisfied with the puzzle, print it. If you are not satisfied, you can go back and change some of the specifications you entered for the crossword puzzle.
