How to Play in the Fall Leaves

When the leaves start to change colors in September and October, they also begin to fall. Having leaves all over your front and back yard is a nuisance, and you can't always rely on the wind to blow them away. However, you can have some fun while cleaning up the leaves by creating games to play while you rake. Just don't forget that once your games are done, you still have to finish cleaning up the yard.

Rake your yard, gathering the leaves into a large pile in the center of the yard, creating a mountain of leaves. Gather a friend or two and play king of the mountain -- whoever reaches the top first is the king. However, you may need to amend the game to say that whoever wades through to the center of the pile of leaves first gets the crown, as chances are you'll each fall through the leaves to the ground instead of climbing on top of them.

Create a fall photo shoot. Rake your leaves into a large pile in the center of your yard. Get out your leaf blower and plug it in. Have a friend ready with a camera. Position another friend in the middle of the leaf pile and turn on the leaf blower. As the leaves are swirling around your friend, take pictures of him or her posing as though he or she were in a magazine. All of you can take turns in the leaves, and later you can create a scrapbook of your fall activities.

Rake your leaves into three long, meticulous rows, about 3 feet apart. With a few friends, take turns hopping in between each row, trying not to disturb the leaves. Whoever can complete the length of the rows without disturbing the leaves is exempt from having to rake them into a compost pile.
