How to Design a Color Theory Game

Color theory is a set of principles governing the use of colors to create aesthetically pleasing combinations and hues. In teaching students about color theory, a game can often be a good teaching tool to help students understand the basics of how colors interact with each other. When designing a game to teach students about color theory, it is important to keep in mind the age range of your students, their existing knowledge of colors, and what concepts of color theory you wish to teach.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the age group for which you are designing the game. Kindergarten age children need a simple, engaging games to keep their interest, while middle school age children can handle more complex game play.

    • 2

Decide which aspects of color theory you wish to focus. Warm colors vs. cool colors is an easy concept for younger children to grasp, while older children may be challenged with color harmony and color context.

    • 3

Take inspiration from existing color theory games. A list of online color theory games can be found in the Resources section of this article.

    • 4

Introduce your students to color theory using brightly colored teaching aids. The color wheel is a familiar sight to most students. Capitalize on their existing knowledge and use it to illustrate your concepts.

    • 5

Keep students engaged by incorporating activities into the game play. Students are more likely to stay focused if the game encourages them to experiment with color in their own projects.
