Ready-to-Use PE Activities for Grades K-2

As a physical education instructor, you want your kindergarten through second grade pupils to take part in activities they enjoy while they burn energy. Sometimes, the most entertaining PE activities do not require any materials and take only a few moments of preparation. These activities help a lot when you don't have a lot of time to plan an agenda for your class.
  1. Up, Down, Stop, Go

    • Start your class with a warm-up activity. Spread the kids around the gym or outdoor area. Throughout the activity, you call out the one-word instructions: "stop," "go," "up" or "down." On "go," all the players move around the gym by walking, running or skipping. On "stop," the players quit moving. When you say "up," the players jump up toward the ceiling. On "down," players immediately sit down cross-legged and wait for your next instruction. Keep playing for a few minutes until you have gone through the set of instructions randomly three or four times.

    Going Through The Tunnel

    • To play this simple relay game for kids, divide the children into two teams. Line the children up a few feet away from each other in single-file lines. Tell the kids to put their feet hip-width apart, except the teams' two last players. When you say "Go," the last players crouch down and crawl, weaving through the spaces between their teammates' legs. As soon as the last player gets to the front of his team's line, the new last player crawls through the "tunnel," as well. The first team to have all its players in their original line up wins the relay game.

    Beware the Blob

    • To get the kids running around and burning energy, play this twist to the classic tag game. Start by selecting one of the players to become the Blob. All other players head away from the Blob as he counts to 100. Once he reaches 100, the Blob races to tag all the other players. Once he tags a player, that person becomes part of the Blob and holds hands with the original Blob or subsequent "members" of the Blob. The game continues until all but one player has become part of the Blob. The last remaining player then becomes the winner of the game.
