Hand-Held String Game Directions

String games entertain and delight children. With hundreds of different "moves," children make "Jacob's Ladders" or "Cat's Cradles" from a piece of old yarn, thread or even shoelaces. According to the String Figure website, string figures also connect children and adults with ancient or distant cultures. The geometric patterns created in the string call forth mythology, children's stories and provide relaxing entertainment.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a knot at the end of the string to create a rope circle.

    • 2

Place the string in between the pinky and ring fingers of both hands, so that when your hands face each other, pulling the string tautly, the string is around both of the pinkies.

    • 3

Touch your thumb to the base of the pinky on the same hand. Push your thumb up midway on the pinky, so that the string slides around the thumb. Pull your hands apart while still facing each other. This should put the string behind the pinky and thumb on both hands and in front of the rest of the fingers.

    • 4

Place the pointer finger on your right hand under the pointer finger on your left hand. Slide your right pointer finger up along the pointer finger of the left hand. Pull back so that the hands face each other. This picks up the rope and places the string behind your right pointer finger. Repeat with the left pointer finger. Pull your hands tautly facing each other. Your string should now make three shapes from the top to the bottom: a triangle with points at your thumbs and in the middle of the string, a diamond with two points at your pointer fingers and another triangle with points at your pinkies.

Alysion calls this final shape "Opening A."

    • 5

Tell a friend to place her hand in the diamond of Opening A.

    • 6

Release the string from your pinkies and pointer fingers. This ties your friend's hand in the string.

    • 7

Repeat the pinky and pointer finger slides to create another "Opening A" while your friend holds her hand still.

    • 8

Release the string from the pinkies and pointer fingers. The rope appears to go right through her hand.
