Activities for Eye Hand Coordination

Most people don't expect to pick up three balls and start juggling them on the first try. Not only does it take repetition, it also takes excellent reflexes. Hand-eye coordination isn't a skill that can technically be taught, but there are a few simple games and activities you can do to help improve your coordination and reaction time.
  1. Play Catch

    • There are different ways you can play catch that will allow you to improve your hand-eye coordination. You can play catch with yourself, throwing the ball up in the air or against the wall, increasing the speed of your throws to make for a faster reaction time. The more you do it, the better your hand-eye coordination will become. You can also play catch with a friend, and write letters all over the ball. As you throw, you have to yell out the last letter you see just before you catch the ball. Because this forces you to look intently at the ball, your visual acuity will sharpen and help your brain coordinate eye and hand movement.

    Play Human Target

    • In this game you will watch an object such as a ball coming at you. The difference between this and playing catch is that instead of trying to catch the object hurtling toward you, you will have to either avoid it or swat it from the air. Like playing catch, watching these objects and then trying to hit them or avoid them can help coordinate eye and hand movement in the brain.

    Play Video Games

    • According to a study reported on by National Geographic, video games can improve your hand-eye coordination. According to the study, watching the movements on the screen in sync with your hand movement on the controller sets off the process in the brain that coordinates vision with your motor skills. In some cases, doctors have prescribed playing video games for children who have poor hand-eye coordination.
