Crazy Softball
Make a home plate and bases and put them on the gym floor in the shape of a softball diamond. Wrap a large towel around a softball bat and tape it in place. Divide the class into two teams and begin a game that follows the rules of softball. Instead of a softball, use a volleyball. The towel around the bat will help prevent injuries to the children.
Hula Hoop Race
Divide players into teams of 10 to 15 each, with the same number of players on each team. Have each team stand in a circle with the players holding hands. Ask two players from each team to release their hands. Put a hula hoop between them, then have the players hold hands again. When you say, "Go," the players try to get the hula hoop all the way around the circle without letting go of each other's hands. Players must maneuver the hula hoop over their legs and arms to get it around the circle. The first team to complete the circle wins.
Mine Field Game
Scatter equipment such as balls, mats, Frisbees and hockey sticks on the gym floor. Pair up the students and have one of each pair wear a blindfold. At the command, "Go," the player without the blindfold, using only his voice, tries to guide his partner across the "mine field." If the blindfolded player touches an item on the floor, he must go back to the starting line. Once a blindfolded player makes it across the mine field, he trades places with his partner. The first pair to have both players walk through the mine field without touching anything wins. For an easier game, put fewer items on the floor.
Tag
The classic game of tag is still popular with elementary school students. For a small group, select one player to be "it." For larger groups, choose two or three. When you yell, "Go," players run around the gym while those who are "it" try to tag them. If a player is tagged, she is out of the game. The last player, or players, tagged becomes "it" for the next game. Use the basketball court lines for boundaries.
