Educational Fish Games

Fish often crop up on school syllabuses, and it's not just because they make great pets. Fish are a useful as a learning tool to help teach kids about biology, animal diversity and habitats. Educational games featuring fish---both offline and online---increase learning while keeping kids entertained. Online educational fish games are typically played through a user's web browser and might require additional software to be downloaded beforehand.
  1. Sorting Fish Race

    • This game is classroom-based and best suited for very young kids of kindergarten level. Before play, the teacher prepares by printing pictures or outlines of various fish, as well as sea mammals and other animals, such as birds. Once the pictures are printed, the teacher glues each to a piece of cardboard for durability.

Kids are handed a copy of each card and must race against one another to sort the shapes into piles or lines as quickly as possible. For example, the kids might organize each fish by its size, each animal by whether it's a fish or a mammal, or where each originates. The first child to sort all of his shapes correctly wins the game. Kids are thus taught about types of animals as well as shapes.

    Build A Fish

    • This web browser game is best suited for junior high school students and aims to teach kids about water habitats and how different fish have adapted to live in different environments. Players begin by choosing an environment, such as marsh or sandy beach. The player must then click on the yellow arrow buttons on-screen to determine the body parts of the fish that would be best adapted for living in the habitat selected. For instance, the player might decide what kind of skin or tail would enable the fish to best maneuver through a marsh.. After he has made his choices, the player clicks on the 'Check Me' button to get a rating on how well-adapted his fish is.

    Create Fish Tank

    • This is another game for kindergarteners and teaches kids how to use the computer mouse while helping them express creativity. Players have to fill a fish tank with fish, crabs, turtles or other creatures. To place a fish, players click on that fish and then click anywhere in the tank. Clicking with the mouse again will place a second fish of that type, until a different fish or another creature is selected. When the player has finished, she can print out her creation by clicking the appropriate button on-screen.
