Quick Touch
See how well your students recognize colors and shapes with this game from the Do It 101 website. Begin by gathering all of the children to the middle of the classroom. Think of a color or shape, such as red or square, and tell your kindergartners to locate something made of that color or shape. The players have to quickly find an object or stand near something that they cannot move (such as a poster on the wall) to show you what they have found. After they have all picked something out, see which of the players picked accurate items. Explain to those who guessed incorrectly what their mistakes are. The game continues for another round with a different shape or color, or both, if you prefer.
Silent Numbers
Figure out how well your kindergartners know their numbers by playing this game from the Education World website. Begin by gathering one piece of paper for every student. Draw one dot on the first piece of paper, two dots on the second paper, three dots on the third and so on until you have made enough for all of your students. Shuffle the papers up and hand one to every player. Tell the whole class they have to line themselves up quickly in the correct numerical order by first counting the number of dots on their papers and then arranging themselves from one to the last number. They have to do this, however, without making a noise. Once they have lined themselves up, see if they have the correct order. If not, have them rearrange themselves. Keep doing this until they are in the right order.
Frozen Letters
To play this game from the Kids' Chalkboard website, begin by writing all of the letters of the alphabet on separate sheets of paper. Make sure to create bold letters so the children are able to see them. Place the letters in a circle on the ground in any random order. Have the players surround the circle and turn on some music. Tell the kids to move around the circle of letters until, suddenly and randomly, you turn the music off. The children have to stop moving and stand at the letter nearest to them. Go around the circle and ask each child which letter they're standing near and a word that begins with that letter. Correct any of the children who give you wrong answers and continue the game.
