How to Play Double Dutch Jump Rope

Double-dutch jump rope was an extremely popular game during the 1940s and 1950s. Interest in the activity decreased in the late '50s when television and radio became more popular forms of entertainment for young people. Double-dutch jump rope made a comeback in the 1970s when people began to notice the health benefits.

It is a great way to have fun while staying in shape, but it's not as easy as it looks. It requires excellent timing and rhythm, but, with a little practice, you can double dutch like a pro.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend a long rope in half. Have the two players who are going to turn face one another, pick up opposite ends of the rope, and walk backwards away from each other, stretching out the rope until there is enough space between them for the jumper to jump.

    • 2

Have each player spread their hands shoulder length apart to separate the two sides of the rope. One player will hold a separate piece of rope in each hand, while the other will hold the portion of the rope that has been bent. The player holding the separate pieces may wish to roll the ends of the rope around her hand to secure it while she is turning.

    • 3

Instruct the players to turn the rope in opposite directions, alternating from side to side, so their right hands turn left and their left hands turn right. The rope should tap the floor, making a steady rhythm.

    • 4

Stand beside either one of the two turners and wait for the right moment to jump in. Carefully watch the rope as it turns and time its rhythm. Jump when the side of the rope furthest from you is turning up and the rope closest to you is turning down. In this way, you will jump in while the rope furthest from you is turning over your head.

    • 5

Move your feet up and down as if you were jogging. Keep up with the pace of the rope.
