Race to the Beehive
This game provides a great way for kids to learn about the different flowers that bees pollinate to produce honey. Cut out pictures of the flowers spread them out around the room. You can choose to separate the children into groups or do a free-for-all, but make sure there is enough space and plenty of chances for everyone to participate. Have the children act like bees by buzzing around the room. When you call out the name of a specific flower, the children must try to find the corresponding cutout as quickly as possible. The first child or team to correctly identify the flower and carry it back to the "beehive," a designated area in the room, will score a point. You may play as many rounds as you like depending on how many flowers you've chosen to review.
A Bee's Nose Knows
This game helps to teach children about the importance of smell for bees to be able to recognize one another. Soak some cotton balls in different clear, nontoxic liquids with easily recognizable smells. These could include vinegar, baby oil, perfume, lemon juice, white grape juice, etc. Place the cotton balls into sealed plastic sandwich bags and make two bags for each scent, making sure there are enough for each student to receive a bag. Distribute the bags randomly among the students, and allow them several moments to identify the smell. Then have the students walk around the room smelling the other bags to try to find someone with the match to the scent in their bag.
Nectar Relay
This game is useful in teaching children about the anatomy of bees and the importance of the proboscis in the pollination process. For the game, split the class into two teams and give each child a plastic drinking straw to act as his or her proboscis. Fill two pitchers with juice to represent a flower filled with nectar. Have the children line up, and on your whistle have each child take a 10-second turn drinking as much juice as he or she can with the straw. The team with the least amount of juice or "nectar" left in the pitcher after each child has had a turn wins the game.
