Christian Games & Activities for Kids

Kids come to Sunday school and children's church with the anticipation of learning in a joyful and active way. Include games in your plans that reinforce Christian values or teach about biblical characters and stories. Leave youngsters with the impression that when they are in the care of a Christian educator, they will have a good time.
  1. Knock, Knock

    • Give kids a chance to play king--or queen--in a game that teaches thinking skills as well as biblical values. Print 10 Christian character-trait words on index cards. Use words that express a biblical value, such as kindness, charity, mercy, discipleship, grace and humility. Tailor the difficulty of the words you choose according to the age of the children who will play the game.

Place the cards face down in a basket. Designate a child to play king, and seat him on a chair--his throne--beside the basket of cards. Line up the rest of the players and let the first child in line choose a card. The player with the card says, "knock, knock." The king tells the child he may enter the throne room. The player draws a card from the basket and gives the king an example of a behavior that would illustrate the word. For "charity," the child may say, "I will share my lunch with a friend who has no lunch money." If the king determines that the example given was a correct interpretation of the word, he takes the card and lets the player into the "kingdom."

Set up a ring of pillows on the floor with a basket of books and a piece of candy for each child that enters the kingdom. Players who make it there enjoy the kingdom until every player has made it through the line. If the answer was not suitable, the king asks the player to try again and go to the back of the line.

    Wind Activites

    • Teach children that the Holy Spirit is compared to the wind in the New Testament book of John. John 3:8 describes the invisible yet present wind, and shares the idea that the Holy Spirit is like that unseen force. Provide children with an assortment of things that create or respond to wind. Lay out pinwheels to blow, personal-sized battery powered fans from the dollar store and paper fans. Make paper fans by folding 9-inch-by-12-inch sheets accordion-style and securing with a staple at one end. On a breezy day, take the kids outside to fly kites.

    Bible Freeze Tag

    • Brainstorm with your children the names and stories about well known biblical characters. Remind them of both men and women from the pages of the Bible. Once the children are acquainted with these figures, play a game of freeze tag, with the rule that when the players freeze, they assume the stance of one of the biblical figures you discussed.
