Scary Games to Play at Home

The right scary games turn a boring day at home into a heart-jumping good time. Many people enjoy being frightened, especially children. A semi-scary movie or book tops the list of slumber parties activities and many young boys have ventured to the graveyard for a peek at night. Even adults enjoy an occasional jolt. Select games that are age appropriate for the occasion.
  1. Tombstone Tipping

    • Thoughts of the undead unnerve the bravest people. Cemeteries are the setting for many ghost stories and horror movies. Create a scary game with a cemetery in your own backyard. Paint different size boxes gray or black to create tombstones. Create enough to fill your available area. Print funny names and sayings on the tombstones such as, "Here lies Ted, would have come to the party, but he's dead." Have volunteers dress as zombies or ghosts and hide under a few of the boxes as they are placed in the yard. When all the tombstones are in place, participants creep into the tombstone and tip over the tombstones. When a tombstone with a person is inside is tipped, the volunteer yells loudly to frighten the tipper. The object is to avoid finding the ghosts and zombies in the graveyard. The winner is the person who tips the most empty tombstones. Play the game with flashlights for the participants to make a little scarier. This game works for all ages.

    Scary Maze

    • Going through a maze is a scary event when unexpected events are bound to occur. Create a maze with a few surprises for a scary game to play at home. Collect large cardboard boxes. Punch out the bottoms and paint the insides black. Add glow-in-the-dark stickers of scary items such as ghosts, zombies and other monsters. Place pieces of fuzzy material and soft craft pom-poms onto the sides of the boxes to touch the participants as they pass through. In the dark, these items appear as bugs or spiders. Use black lights in different boxes if available along with scary black light paint pictures. Arrange the boxes on their sides, pushed together to form a continuous tunnel. Place volunteers at different areas of the maze to shake the boxes, scream or make other scary noises. The winner is the person who gets through the maze the fastest without going back.

    Scary Scavenger Hunt

    • Scavenger hunts are traditional party games. Give it a scary twist with a few objectionable objects. Wet stuffed rats or mice intended for pets or party favor to give them a dead and rotting appearance. Select fuzzy or realistic looking spiders, bugs and rubber worms. Hide the objects in a particular area. Divide the participants into small groups. Start the hunt in the dark and give each group a flashlight. Do not give them a list of what to find, but only directions to find the dead creatures. On go, the teams find and collect the vile appearing objects. The nature of the objects will cause hesitation for the finder. Set a specific time limit on the hunt. At the end of the time, the team with the most dead critters wins.
