Stick Shooting Games for Kids

Games that use sticks to shoot a ball in a particular direction are excellent ways to improve motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Many of these are team sports that also aid in sportsmanship practice and an active lifestyle. These games are often adult games originally, but specialized kid-sized equipment is available to bring them down to a smaller, more beginner level.
  1. Roller Hockey

    • Many forms of hockey exist, but roller hockey is one that is typically designed with kids in mind. It requires very little equipment and can be played anywhere where there is pavement available to skate on. Kids will play this usually wearing inline skates, with two goals that can be purchased or made with PVC pipe. Each child has a hockey stick and the game can have a puck or a ball to shoot. There can be up to five players at a time on each side, including one goalie on each side. The purpose is to shoot the ball or puck into the opponent's goal. By the end of a selected amount of time, the team with the most points wins.

    Billiards

    • This is originally an adult game where players hit a white cue ball that in turn hits numbered balls into pockets on a table. Child-sized pool cues are shorter than adult cues to let kids enjoy the game from an early age. Kid-sized tables can also be used, but kids can play billiards games on adult tables with the help of a step. To start, kids should be taught how to properly hold their bridge hand on the table. To play a game with a child, remove the cue ball and have her shoot each ball into a pocket directly. Eventually, you can introduce more of the official billiards rules until the children are tall enough to play a full game on a full-sized table.

    Croquet

    • Though this is considered an antique sport for adults, it is a great stick shooting game for kids to play. It can be played between children only or with a mixture of children and adults. Short croquet mallets are available for children to use. The object of the game is to hit a ball through a target in the grass. Special targets are made with kids in mind that are shaped like animals or dinosaurs or that require you to do extra tasks, like sing songs. If you are using an adult set, you can move the targets a bit closer together than you normally would in order to help kids be successful. Use this game at a birthday party or barbecue.
