Good Indoor Games for Kids

Just because it&'s raining outside doesn&'t mean that your kids can&'t have fun playing games with friends. Move the games indoors, and be creative with the games you choose. Play a variety of games that challenge both children&'s physical prowess and mental abilities. Games can be played by teams or individuals against each other.
  1. Sock Toss Game

    • Children can play a game with socks that practices hitting a target from a distance. Ask each child to take his socks off and roll them up into a ball. The object for each child is to toss her socks from a designated foul line into a hat at a distance away. The distance can be adjusted for difficulty level based on the age and ability of the children. Landing a sock in the hat scores three points. If no child lands one in the hat, the one that is closest gets one point. Play several rounds, until one player reaches 15 points, and at that point the player with the highest score at the end of the round wins.

    Egg Relay Race

    • Children line up in teams with the same number of children on each team for the egg relay race. Each of the children is given a spoon. The goal of the race is to pass an egg from the front of the line to the back of it, using just the spoons. If the egg hits the floor, it must be placed back on the spoon of the child that dropped it. Considering this is an indoor game, it&'s best to use a hard boiled egg. The first team to get the egg passed to the back of the line wins.

    Balloon Volleyball

    • Play volleyball inside of your home. Instead of using a volleyball, limit the risk of damage by using balloons. The playing area should be divided into two halves of equal size. Place boxes on the middle line to form a net, so a ball can not be hit too low over the center line. Teams compete to try to land the ball on the other team&'s side of the net. If one team hits the balloon out of bounds, the opposing team scores a point. Rules can be adjusted for the age of players, but can include limiting the team to three hits maximum before the balloon goes over the net, or stating that one player is not allowed to hit the balloon twice in a row.

    Soda Bottle Bowling

    • Collect 2-liter soda bottles as you finish them. These bottles should be rinsed out before being used for the game, with about two inches of water at the bottom of each bottle. Arrange six to 10 bottles in a triangle on the floor. The first row has one bottle, second has two and the third has three. If you use 10 bottles, create a fourth row with four bottles. Each player gets just one roll on his turn using a soccer ball. Award him a score equal to the number of bottles knocked down. Players take turns until each player has rolled 10 times. The player with the highest score wins. The distance players roll the ball from can be adjusted based on skill level.
